Book Summary: Seventeen-year-old twins Sadie and Mason Peabody deal regularly with the usual teenage drama: school, friends, and parents. But bright and intuitive as they are, neither could have guessed just what destiny has in store for them. Centuries before, an intricate plan was laid by the Originals, a group of witches and warlocks who struggled to maintain the balance between light and dark magic. Their efforts set into motion an eternal battle that threatens to entomb the world in a maze of power, ambition, and fear. These powerful magic users knew that they needed some insurance against oblivion, so they devised a way to secretly transfer their magic through their lineage. Sadie and Mason are suddenly forced into the family business, a world of magic they can’t hope to understand, let alone control. The twins must now find a way to navigate their strange new existence. As the old world collides with the new, the bizarre becomes their new normal. As a force more powerful than even the Originals is unleashed, the newest witch and warlock in the family will have to dig deep to survive, let alone save the world.

Book Summary: What is life? Where do we come from and how did we evolve? What is the universe and how was it formed? What is the nature of the material world? How does it work? How and why do we think? What does it mean to be human? How do we know? There are many different versions of our creation story. This book tells the version according to modern science. It is a unique account, starting at the Big Bang and travelling right up to the emergence of humans as conscious intelligent beings, 13.8 billion years later. Chapter by chapter, it sets out the current state of scientific knowledge: the origins of space and time; energy, mass, and light; galaxies, stars, and our sun; the habitable earth, and complex life itself. Book Summary: What can a theologian do with Deleuze? While using philosophy as a resource for theology is nothing new, Gilles Deleuze (1925-1995) presents a kind of limit-case for such a theological appropriation of philosophy: a thoroughly "modern" philosophy that would seem to be fundamentally hostile to Christian theology-a philosophy of atheistic immanence with an essentially chaotic vision of the world. Nonetheless, Deleuze's philosophy can generate many potential intersections with theology opening onto a field of configurations: a fractious middle between radical Deleuzian theologies that would think through theology and reinterpret it from the perspective of some version of Deleuzian philosophy and other theologies that would seek to learn from and respond to Deleuze from the perspective of confessional theology-to take from the encounter with Deleuze an opportunity to clarify and reform an orthodox Christian self-understanding.

Book Summary: Over the past twenty years, Roger Scruton has been developing a conservative view of human beings, society and culture. The tone of this book is positive and the arguments are recommendations with the aim of convincing the reader that rumours of the death of Western civilisation are greatly exaggerated. Much of our present self doubt, argues Scruton, is brought about by the Darwinian theory of evolution. Darwin encourages us to see human emotion as a reproductive strategy. This is a perspective which Scurton attacks vehemently especially in its modern proponents- Desmond Morris and Richard Dawkins. This the author believes undermines the belief in freedom and the moral imperatives that stem from it.

Book Summary: Third book in Arnold Bennett's "Clayhanger" trilogy, preceded by Clayhanger (1910) and Hilda Lessways (1911), chronicles the married life of Edwin and Hilda. Edwin, now released from the controlling influence of his father, finds himself free to run his business and his life, a freedom that is diminished by his wife's caprices. Edwin does not enjoy an entirely happy marriage with Hilda. She does not conform to the period's stereotype of a submissive wife - which is, of course, partly why Edwin married her. It is also suggested - although according to the conventions of the time it is not stated - that the marriage is based on sexual compatibility, and as a result its problems are outside the bedroom. Hilda, who is rescued from virtual destitution by Edwin through their marriage, and who already has a child, is not a figure of passive gratitude, and has opinions on matters - such as Edwin's business - which would normally be a wholly male preserve. Edwin has his doubts about their union, and is brought to (mostly impotent) anger by his wife just as he had been by his father. The book shows how Hilda and Edwin attempt to compromise, its title being a play on words: does it mean "these two" or "these separate"? It is suggested that they had both become perhaps too set in their ways before their marriage, even though each was in some way 'saved' by their union.
