Book Summary: In war-torn Sudan, a girl must make heart-rending choices as she fights for survival and a chance at a future. “This short, quickly paced narrative will stay with readers for the rest of their lives.” School Library Journali, STARRED REVIEW “Moving and necessary.” Kirkus, STARRED REVIEW For Poni, life in her small village in southern Sudan is simple and complicated at the same time. Stay in school. Beat up any boy who tries to show attention. Watch out for the dangers in the river. But then the war comes. And when soldiers arrive in her village and bombs begin to rain from the sky, there is only one thing for Poni to do. Run. Poni runs for her life, and alongside thousands of refugees, she must then make a long, dusty trek across the east African countryside. Driven by the sheer will to survive, Poni finds her way to the Kakuma refugee camp in Kenya, where she hopes to be reunited with her family. And if she is lucky, she will one day be able to convince the authorities that she is worthy to go to the land of opportunity. But the misery in Kakuma is almost overwhelming, and sooner than Poni could have imagined, she is on the run again. With single-minded determination, Poni survives hell and back, but she cannot escape the war’s devastating psychological effects or her survivor’s guilt. In a heartbreaking final twist, Poni finds her mother just as she is about to leave for America—forcing her to make the hardest decision of all. You’ll need to be; this thriller will test your brain with its reverse chronological structure, and it’s a page-turner to boot.” —Elle Like the spellbinding psychological suspense in The Girl on the Train and Luckiest Girl Alive, Megan Miranda’s novel is a nail-biting, breathtaking story about the disappearances of two young women—a decade apart—told in reverse. It’s been ten years since Nicolette Farrell left her rural hometown after her best friend, Corinne, disappeared from Cooley Ridge without a trace. Back again to tie up loose ends and care for her ailing father, Nic is soon plunged into a shocking drama that reawakens Corinne’s case and breaks open old wounds long since stitched. The decade-old investigation focused on Nic, her brother Daniel, boyfriend Tyler, and Corinne’s boyfriend Jackson. Since then, only Nic has left Cooley Ridge. Daniel and his wife, Laura, are expecting a baby; Jackson works at the town bar; and Tyler is dating Annaleise Carter, Nic’s younger neighbor and the group’s alibi the night Corinne disappeared. Then, within days of Nic’s return, Annaleise goes missing. Told backwards—Day 15 to Day 1—from the time Annaleise goes missing, Nic works to unravel the truth about her younger neighbor’s disappearance, revealing shocking truths about her friends, her family, and what really happened to Corinne that night ten years ago. Like nothing you’ve ever read before, All the Missing Girls delivers in all the right ways. With twists and turns that lead down dark alleys and dead ends, you may think you’re walking a familiar path, but then Megan Miranda turns it all upside down and inside out and leaves us wondering just how far we would be willing to go to protect those we love.

Book Summary: A compelling history of extraordinary children - brought up by animals, growing up alone in the wilderness, or locked for long years in solitary confinement. Wild or feral children have fascinated us down the centuries, and continue to do so today. Michael Newton deftly investigates such infamous cases as Peter the Wild Boy, who gripped the attention of Swift and Defoe; Memmie Le Blanc, the savage Girl of Champagne, a primitive outsider adrift on the streets of Enlightenment; Kaspar Hauser, a romantic orphan confined in a dungeon from infancy for sixteen years; Kamala and Amala, two girls brought up by wolves in the imperial India of the 1920s; and more recently, Genie, the girl locked up in a single room in Los Angeles throughout her whole childhood. He looks too at a boy bought up among monkeys in Uganda; and in Moscow, the boy found living with a pack of wild dogs.Savage Girls and Wild Boys looks at the lives of these children and of the adults who 'rescued' them, looked after them, educated or abused them. How can we explain the mixture of disgust and envy such children can provoke? And what can they teach us about our notions of education and civilisation?

Book Summary: Based on a 19th century unsolved murder, this “artfully constructed” historical novel explores family life and a mysterious death in the Maritime Provinces (Quill & Quire). Nova Scotia, 1876. Sixteen-year-old Mary Harney is a dreamer who wants more than anything to escape her family’s Cumberland County homestead. Terrorized by her alcoholic father, she receives cold comfort from her melancholy mother, Ann. But when Ann becomes ill, the already tenuous family life begins to unravel—until the September evening when Mary suddenly goes missing. Across the water on Prince Edward Island, Gilbert Bell’s son finds a body washed up on the beach below the family farm. Mary’s father quickly identifies the body as hers. As the community is visited first by the local coroner and then by investigators, a mysterious tale comes into focus. Found Drowned is both a riveting domestic thriller and a darkly fascinating picture of 19th century life, law, and criminal investigation in Nova Scotia. At once tightly plotted and pensive, the novel travels back to the circumstances that led to Mary’s disappearance and then back further to the circumstances of her parents’ marriage, all the while building toward a raucous courtroom finale.

Plant Intelligence and the Imaginal Realm

Author : Stephen Harrod Buhner

ISBN10 : 1591438365

Publisher : Simon and Schuster

Number of Pages : 576

Category : Body, Mind & Spirit

Viewed : 1122

Book Summary: A manual for opening the doors of perception and directly engaging the intelligence of the Natural World • Provides exercises to directly perceive and interact with the complex, living, self-organizing being that is Gaia • Reveals that every life form on Earth is highly intelligent and communicative • Examines the ecological function of invasive plants, bacterial resistance to antibiotics, psychotropic plants and fungi, and the human species In Plant Intelligence and the Imaginal Realm, Stephen Harrod Buhner reveals that all life forms on Earth possess intelligence, language, a sense of I and not I, and the capacity to dream. He shows that by consciously opening the doors of perception, we can reconnect with the living intelligences in Nature as kindred beings, become again wild scientists, nondomesticated explorers of a Gaian world just as Goethe, Barbara McClintock, James Lovelock, and others have done. For as Einstein commented, “We cannot solve the problems facing us by using the same kind of thinking that created them.” Buhner explains how to use analogical thinking and imaginal perception to directly experience the inherent meanings that flow through the world, that are expressed from each living form that surrounds us, and to directly initiate communication in return. He delves deeply into the ecological function of invasive plants, bacterial resistance to antibiotics, psychotropic plants and fungi, and, most importantly, the human species itself. He shows that human beings are not a plague on the planet, they have a specific ecological function as important to Gaia as that of plants and bacteria. Buhner shows that the capacity for depth connection and meaning-filled communication with the living world is inherent in every human being. It is as natural as breathing, as the beating of our own hearts, as our own desire for intimacy and love. We can change how we think and in so doing begin to address the difficulties of our times.

Book Summary: Adam Martin is not your classic small town physician. He has been involved in research with Nobel Prize winning laboratories and has a PhD in genetics. The small town of Wilford Fork has given him more than a practice in obstetrics and gynecology. It has produced an experience in genetics beyond his wildest imagination. The genetics of the Bible from Noah to the 21st Century, take him on a journey from ancient Babylon to the New Babel. His journey is not without the love of his life, who becomes more than a nurse, as he experiences life in a small Southern town. Her influence, intelligence and beauty take him into the new age commune and to the edge of idolatry. Even his partners move him toward the destiny of Bible genetics that have influenced everyone from the Church to the evil of Adolph Hitler. New Babel is the modern commune in the Southern town that is patterned after ancient Babylon. It is here that the young obstetrician learns about the delivery of infants that were never encountered in the Ivory Tower medical school. The Sons of God, in this powerful new community can change both mankind, and the young physician, showing him the dark side of research. Babylon throughout history has been the site of wild creation and will lead to the end times mentioned in Biblical Revelation with the prostitute of Babylon riding on a dragon. The Sons of God of New Babel, just like their predecessors in the Old Testament who led the world to the flood, will lead the world toward the final apocalypse.

Panic, Transnational Cultural Studies, and the Affective Contours of Power

Book Summary: This volume explores the panic that is a central affective register of our current international order. Fears of Somali pirates, "Gypsy" kidnappers, African warlords, Ebola, "Mexican meth," pimps, coyotes, gangs, climate refugees and more, structure the dark side of a metropolitan unconscious. These are terrors over things that (might) cross borders, threatening the sanctity of territoriality and capital. Inspired by scholarship challenging panics around human and sex trafficking, the contributors to this volume develop the umbrella category of the global moral panic. Embracing the challenge of grasping a phenomenon not previously regarded as cohering, they consider panics provoked by travel, passage, transgression; panics over bodies that move. Like panics over trafficking, the episodes narrated here ride and feed a field of common sense regarding crime, rights, and state power. Their logics of victims and villains nourish notions of the centrality of punishment, drawing from and feeding taxonomies of gender, race, and nation, solidifying the order craved by capital. They spotlight the coloniality of power, the ongoing salience of empire, the savior logics of rescue, and the profound sexism organizing hierarchies of bodies and places. Panic, this volume diagnoses, is a crucial, undertheorized facet of contemporary local-global relations.

Rape and Politics

Book Summary: Rape is a type of sexual assault usually involving sexual intercourse or other forms of sexual penetration carried out against a person without that person's consent. The act may be carried out by physical force, coercion, abuse of authority, or against a person who is incapable of giving valid consent, such as one who is unconscious, incapacitated, has an intellectual disability, or is below the legal age of consent. It is means of intimidation and control which function to perpetuate the subordinate status of women, and now, children in patriarch societies. In particular, an 11-year-old girl’s dead body was found in a waste bin with 80 wounds in Gujarat. Rape is an anti-social, cruel, heinous activity where protesters are mostly women by candle-light marches, slogan-raising in market squares. The participation of men are rarely seen, and this attitude is very unfortunate, irresponsible, highly atrocious committed against innocent girls. As per the Prime Minister of India, Rape is Rape; do not politicise it (said on Thursday 19th April 2018 during his London trip). Rape is the most heinous crime committed against women in India. According to the National Crime Report Bureau’s 2013 annual report, 24,923 rape cases were reported across India in 2012. Out of which 24,470 were committed by someone known to the victim. A total of 34,651 cases of rape were reported in India in 2015. Out of these, in 33,098 cases the offenders were known to the victims, revealed the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data. When rape is classified under Section 375 of the Indian Penal Code, why the Government is not taking strict actions against the perpetrators? An amendment with mutatis mutandis having more specific punishments and the powers for the quick disposal of the cases should be enacted with immediate effect. In different parts of the world, the punishment for rape ranges from life imprisonment, death sentences to castration. But in India, the Government do not seem to take it as a serious crime. In many cases, political interference is the main cause of delay. "No culprit will be spared," the PM said amid anger over Kathua and Unnao Rape Cases. When the accused will be punished? Under the present practice, it will take many years to dispose of the case. However, I tried to create awareness among the future generation to save our daughters, sisters and women from this heinous crime.

Book Summary: A three-novel anthology that wallows in dark, twisted humour, sexual obsession and the latent violence of the male animal. Book 1: Looking For Sarah Jane Smith Marty's living in a Welsh town he hates, doing a job he's lost interest in and so bored he can't even be bothered with sex. But a new life beckons in Australia. It's also a chance to get away from his stupid mates, the loveable loser John and the ultra-macho Wasp Boy. Maybe he'll even meet an exquisite girl like his Doctor Who heroine, Sarah Jane Smith, and live happily ever after… Looking for Sarah Jane Smith – For anyone who suspects life's a bit rubbish. Part road trip and part celebration of idiotic male friendship, Looking for Sarah Jane Smith is sure to strike a chord with those who appreciate Withnail & I, Peep Show and Bill Hicks. '...if there's one thing that stands out about this, it's how bloody funny it is. I actually packed Looking for Sarah Jane Smith for a long-haul flight and such a page-turner did it prove to be that I finished it within a couple of hours.' - Living Abroad Magazine '...A bitter, crude, but funny book... These boys are not particularly likeable, but their story is raw, honest, unsophisticated and rooted in bittersweet reality.' - Post Newspapers 'An agreeably raucous novel that touches on Dr Who and men behaving badly. Its strong language and adult scenes make it the perfect Christmas gift for that impressionable nephew.' - The West Australian Book 2: Girls Like Funny Boys Part coming of age story, part exploration of the maddening nature of dreams, Girls Like Funny Boys is a potent mix of sexual obsession, guilt and fame. "Gina crouched, resting on her haunches to continue the conversation. Her legs were too far apart. There was a hole in her black tights just above the left knee. Johnny felt a hot urge to poke a finger in it. He wished she'd leave him alone. He wished she wasn't wearing tights. He stared at her lopsided mouth and the way her fat lower lip jutted out. It was so red it bordered on purple, the colour of strawberries on the turn." Meet Johnny Goodwin. He's grown up in a quiet Brisbane suburb with loving parents, a faithful dog and an unrequited yearning for his teenage sweetheart, Angie Everson. Now in his last year at school, he's finally caught her eye by starring in a teacher-baiting pantomime. Dreams are already taking shape of a career in entertainment, perhaps with Angie by his side. All he's got to do is pass his exams, get to uni and keep away from Gina Wood, that weird girl who once let him touch her… 'Girls Like Funny Boys wasn't what I expected - and that's simply not fair as Dave Franklin's not meant to be writing to a formula. But I really didn't expect to find this as engaging, involving and quite as emotional as I did. I loved Johnny, rode the waves of his life every step of the way. Most of all I just loved this book.' - Australian Crime Fiction Book 3: To Dare A Future A van driver with abduction and murder on his mind. An eleven-year-old girl snatched on her way home from ballet. A tortured reporter, happy to use her death and the terrifying reign of a child killer to help make his name… To Dare A Future – We all have black thoughts. It's just some of us act on them. 'Don't let the rather bland title put you off – this is an impressive read, spiced with ethical dilemmas as well as earthy dialogue and humour.' – Sunday Times

Book Summary: This book is a collection of contemporary essays and squibs exploring the mental representation of Spanish and other languages in the Romance family. Although largely formal in orientation, they incorporate experimental and corpus data to inform questions of synchronic and diachronic importance. As a whole, these contributions explore two areas of particular interest to linguistic theorizing. The first is linguistic interfaces with chapters on syntax-information structure, syntax-prosody, syntax-semantics, and lexicon-phonology. The second consists of explorations of noun phrases of all sizes—from clitics to nominalized clauses. The results and conclusions of these studies encourage researchers to continue to explore individual languages in particular in order to gain insight on human language in general. This edited volume in honor of Dr. Paula Kempchinsky is reflective of the diversity of approaches that inspired her teaching, research, and mentoring for over thirty years at the University of Iowa and beyond.
