Book Summary: #1 New York Times Bestseller “Significant...The book is both instructive and surprisingly moving.” —The New York Times Ray Dalio, one of the world’s most successful investors and entrepreneurs, shares the unconventional principles that he’s developed, refined, and used over the past forty years to create unique results in both life and business—and which any person or organization can adopt to help achieve their goals. In 1975, Ray Dalio founded an investment firm, Bridgewater Associates, out of his two-bedroom apartment in New York City. Forty years later, Bridgewater has made more money for its clients than any other hedge fund in history and grown into the fifth most important private company in the United States, according to Fortune magazine. Dalio himself has been named to Time magazine’s list of the 100 most influential people in the world. Along the way, Dalio discovered a set of unique principles that have led to Bridgewater’s exceptionally effective culture, which he describes as “an idea meritocracy that strives to achieve meaningful work and meaningful relationships through radical transparency.” It is these principles, and not anything special about Dalio—who grew up an ordinary kid in a middle-class Long Island neighborhood—that he believes are the reason behind his success. In Principles, Dalio shares what he’s learned over the course of his remarkable career. He argues that life, management, economics, and investing can all be systemized into rules and understood like machines. The book’s hundreds of practical lessons, which are built around his cornerstones of “radical truth” and “radical transparency,” include Dalio laying out the most effective ways for individuals and organizations to make decisions, approach challenges, and build strong teams. He also describes the innovative tools the firm uses to bring an idea meritocracy to life, such as creating “baseball cards” for all employees that distill their strengths and weaknesses, and employing computerized decision-making systems to make believability-weighted decisions. While the book brims with novel ideas for organizations and institutions, Principles also offers a clear, straightforward approach to decision-making that Dalio believes anyone can apply, no matter what they’re seeking to achieve. Here, from a man who has been called both “the Steve Jobs of investing” and “the philosopher king of the financial universe” (CIO magazine), is a rare opportunity to gain proven advice unlike anything you’ll find in the conventional business press.

Book Summary: INTRODUCTIONCAN PRINCIPLES tell us where we come from and where we are going? What have we done well, or what have we done wrong? What do we know and what do we not know?Ray Dalio introduces us to his book on how principles can set the path to a successful life, both personally and professionally. He focused on the main theme of the book based more on what was unknown to him, than on what he knew. He describes in a masterly way how he discovered that through his principles he was able to decide what is true and how to use it to achieve success. In this way, through the lines of 'principles' he wants to help his readers to be more successful.Dalio through his text advises that each one discovers and understands their own principles, which can be refined with the experiences one has over time in order to make better decisions. The first thing the billionaire recommends is to think about himself and decide what he wants, what is his truth, and what he must do to get what he wants from his truth. With the reading of this book you will learn how principles become fundamental truths through which you can shape your behavior without losing sight of the result, which is nothing more than getting what you want in life. For Ray Dalio if you think about yourself, your strengths and weaknesses with an open mind to discover what is best for you and face the challenges with courage and determination, you will get the most out of your life and in this way what you want.ABOUT THE ORIGINAL BOOK"PRINCIPLES, is a book very well organized into three parts, each of which has several chapters. In the first, Dalio summarizes his personal and professional life. He tells us about his failures and how all those life experiences allowed him to know himself, his strengths and weaknesses, which led him to know his principles in depth, guiding him to a process of making the right decisions. This part allows the reader to know more about the author's personal history. In the second part of the book, the author reveals his principles in greater depth, demonstrating how he applies them in his personal and professional life. In this part, Dalio gives us the tools, through five steps that provide a road map, to successfully obtain what is wanted. The author deepens and describes how he came to know the principles on which his personal life is based. In the third part he describes in detail how in his company Bridgewater, Dalio managed to unite these principles described in part 2, masterfully building an organization with goals and a mission outlined from personal principles. He describes how he managed to merge these personal principles with the objective of forming an organization based on the idea of meritocracy that aims to achieve meaningful work and relationships through what he defines as "radical truth and radical transparency." In this last part he teaches us to apply personal principles in business life.PART I: WHERE DO I COME FROMIN THIS FIRST PART divided into 8 chapters, the author makes a brief history of his personal and professional life. Through this description, he tries to show how people are not born with the ability to make decisions, but that they acquire the ability based on their own experiences. He clearly states that while anyone pursues their objectives, they will inevitably face different complicated situations and make mistakes. It is only through these experiences that you will know your own weaknesses and strengths. In this part, the author shows how he became aware of the system of principles, and how he has used them to achieve success in his personal and professional life.

Book Summary: What really sets the best managers above the rest? It’s their power to build a cadre of employees who have great inner work lives—consistently positive emotions; strong motivation; and favorable perceptions of the organization, their work, and their colleagues. The worst managers undermine inner work life, often unwittingly. As Teresa Amabile and Steven Kramer explain in The Progress Principle, seemingly mundane workday events can make or break employees’ inner work lives. But it’s forward momentum in meaningful work—progress—that creates the best inner work lives. Through rigorous analysis of nearly 12,000 diary entries provided by 238 employees in 7 companies, the authors explain how managers can foster progress and enhance inner work life every day. The book shows how to remove obstacles to progress, including meaningless tasks and toxic relationships. It also explains how to activate two forces that enable progress: (1) catalysts—events that directly facilitate project work, such as clear goals and autonomy—and (2) nourishers—interpersonal events that uplift workers, including encouragement and demonstrations of respect and collegiality. Brimming with honest examples from the companies studied, The Progress Principle equips aspiring and seasoned leaders alike with the insights they need to maximize their people’s performance.

Book Summary: Fooled by Randomness is a standalone book in Nassim Nicholas Taleb’s landmark Incerto series, an investigation of opacity, luck, uncertainty, probability, human error, risk, and decision-making in a world we don’t understand. The other books in the series are The Black Swan, Antifragile, Skin in the Game, and The Bed of Procrustes. Fooled by Randomness is the word-of-mouth sensation that will change the way you think about business and the world. Nassim Nicholas Taleb–veteran trader, renowned risk expert, polymathic scholar, erudite raconteur, and New York Times bestselling author of The Black Swan–has written a modern classic that turns on its head what we believe about luck and skill. This book is about luck–or more precisely, about how we perceive and deal with luck in life and business. Set against the backdrop of the most conspicuous forum in which luck is mistaken for skill–the world of trading–Fooled by Randomness provides captivating insight into one of the least understood factors in all our lives. Writing in an entertaining narrative style, the author tackles major intellectual issues related to the underestimation of the influence of happenstance on our lives. The book is populated with an array of characters, some of whom have grasped, in their own way, the significance of chance: the baseball legend Yogi Berra; the philosopher of knowledge Karl Popper; the ancient world’s wisest man, Solon; the modern financier George Soros; and the Greek voyager Odysseus. We also meet the fictional Nero, who seems to understand the role of randomness in his professional life but falls victim to his own superstitious foolishness. However, the most recognizable character of all remains unnamed–the lucky fool who happens to be in the right place at the right time–he embodies the “survival of the least fit.” Such individuals attract devoted followers who believe in their guru’s insights and methods. But no one can replicate what is obtained by chance. Are we capable of distinguishing the fortunate charlatan from the genuine visionary? Must we always try to uncover nonexistent messages in random events? It may be impossible to guard ourselves against the vagaries of the goddess Fortuna, but after reading Fooled by Randomness we can be a little better prepared. Book Summary: In this innovative and comprehensive collection of essays Jack Lightstone and Frederick Bird document and interpret ritual practice among contemporary Canadian Jews. They particularly focus on the character and meaning of the public performance of the Sabbath liturgy in six urban Canadian synagogues, ranging from Orthodox to Reform, and from large congregations to a small house synagogue-yeshiva (rabbinic academy). Their examination of synagogue ritual is complemented with accounts of the ritual life of contemporary Canadian Jews outside the synagogue — amongst their families, within their homes and beyond. In contrast with other studies of Jewish observance, Lightstone and Bird document not simply which rituals are practised and how often; rather they stress the meaning, including the social meaning, of these rituals and treat them as complex symbolic systems. Their multidisciplinary approach together with their openness to include a wide variety of phenomena in their study (for example, the organization of the physical setting of the Sabbath, dress codes and patterns of greeting and handshaking) place this work at the very forefront of current research. Ritual and Ethnic Identity will be of great value to historians and sociologists of religion, anthropologists and all those concerned with religion, ritual and Canadian Jewish and ethnic studies.

Book Summary: A Wrinkle in Time is the winner of the 1963 Newbery Medal. It was a dark and stormy night—Meg Murry, her small brother Charles Wallace, and her mother had come down to the kitchen for a midnight snack when they were upset by the arrival of a most disturbing stranger. "Wild nights are my glory," the unearthly stranger told them. "I just got caught in a downdraft and blown off course. Let me sit down for a moment, and then I'll be on my way. Speaking of ways, by the way, there is such a thing as a tesseract." A tesseract (in case the reader doesn't know) is a wrinkle in time. To tell more would rob the reader of the enjoyment of Miss L'Engle's unusual book. A Wrinkle in Time, winner of the Newbery Medal in 1963, is the story of the adventures in space and time of Meg, Charles Wallace, and Calvin O'Keefe (athlete, student, and one of the most popular boys in high school). They are in search of Meg's father, a scientist who disappeared while engaged in secret work for the government on the tesseract problem.

Book Summary: Stig Kanger (1924-1988) made important contributions to logic and formal philosophy. Kanger's dissertation Provability in Logic, 1957, contained significant results in proof theory as well as the first fully worked out model-theoretic interpretation of quantified modal logic. It is generally accepted nowadays that Kanger was one of the originators of possible worlds semantics for modal logic. Kanger's most original achievements were in the areas of general proof theory, the semantics of modal and deontic logic, and the logical analysis of the concept of rights. He also contributed to action theory, preference logic, and the theory of measurement. This is the first of two volumes dedicated to the work of Stig Kanger. The present volume is a complete collection of Kanger's philosophical papers. The second volume contains critical essays on Kanger's work, as well as biographical essays on Kanger written by colleagues and friends.

Book Summary: The lessons of Henry Ford, one of America's greatest business innovators, are as fresh and vital today as they were in 1922, when this extraordinary book was first published. Though the title suggests the autobiographical, this is in fact a bible of business philosophy from the man many considered "insane" for the very innovations we hail as visionary today: the assembly line, reduced working hours, a minimum wage, the five-day work week. Ford explains: . how his experiences as an employee influenced his philosophies as an employer . why saving money isn't always a good thing . the absolute worst time to approach a bank for a loan . why lowering prices below production costs can be a smart move . and much more. It's easy to see that much of Ford's wisdom has been forgotten today-and that individual entrepreneurs and global corporations alike would do well to take another look. American entrepreneur, inventor, and philanthropist HENRY FORD (1863-1947) was born in Michigan and trained as a machinist and engineer before founding, in 1903, the Ford Motor Company.

Book Summary: Seminar paper from the year 2016 in the subject Sociology - Social System, Social Structure, Class, Social Stratification, grade: 1,0, University of applied sciences, Düsseldorf, language: English, abstract: The objective in this paper is the depiction of the work-life balance concept as a strategy of employer branding in order to finally improve intrinsic and extrinsic motivation as a result thereof. Focussing on the practical example of the Adidas Group and its workplace in Herzogenaurach - which is known as „The Adidas Campus“ - the emphasis lies on the evaluation how the expectations of the „Generation Z“ are met and what consequences are revealed. The society nowadays undergoes manifold social alterations such as demographic change, globalisation or change of generations. The dynamics of these developments do not relate only to the people but also to the companies who have to accept these challenges. The necessity to act upon the requirement of social and economic adaption lead to the formula of success. For instance, attracting young professionals by creating targeted employment conditions constitutes simultaneously the solution for lack of specialists and the aging workforce in an organisation. According to a recent online survey conducted in Germany by the online statistics portal „Statista“, 81% of young professionals between 25 and 34 years consciously care about work-life balance. Focussing on the needs of junior employees, who also go by the term of „Generation Z“ for people born beginning from 1995, represents the current strategic orientation of companies. The „Generation Z“ or „Digital Natives“ are to be distinguished from their predecessors in terms of expectations towards employer. In comparison to the „Babyboomers“ or „Generation X“, the present generation is surrounded by the omnipresence of Internet and thus social media. Respecting this fact by providing a complying digital work environment, can influnce employer branding and employee motivation in a positive way.
