The Bill of Rights

Book Summary: “Narrative, celebratory history at its purest” (Publishers Weekly)—the real story of how the Bill of Rights came to be: a vivid account of political strategy, big egos, and the partisan interests that set the terms of the ongoing contest between the federal government and the states. Those who argue that the Bill of Rights reflects the founding fathers’ “original intent” are wrong. The Bill of Rights was actually a brilliant political act executed by James Madison to preserve the Constitution, the federal government, and the latter’s authority over the states. In the skilled hands of award-winning historian Carol Berkin, the story of the founders’ fight over the Bill of Rights comes alive in a drama full of partisanship, clashing egos, and cunning manipulation. In 1789, the nation faced a great divide around a question still unanswered today: should broad power and authority reside in the federal government or should it reside in state governments? The Bill of Rights, from protecting religious freedom to the people’s right to bear arms, was a political ploy first and a matter of principle second. The truth of how and why Madison came to devise this plan, the debates it caused in the Congress, and its ultimate success is more engrossing than any of the myths that shroud our national beginnings. The debate over the Bill of Rights still continues through many Supreme Court decisions. By pulling back the curtain on the short-sighted and self-interested intentions of the founding fathers, Berkin reveals the anxiety many felt that the new federal government might not survive—and shows that the true “original intent” of the Bill of Rights was simply to oppose the Antifederalists who hoped to diminish the government’s powers. This book is “a highly readable American history lesson that provides a deeper understanding of the Bill of Rights, the fears that generated it, and the miracle of the amendments” (Kirkus Reviews).

Addicted to Outrage

Number of Pages : 400

Category : Political Science

Book Summary: Glenn Beck—author of thirteen #1 New York Times bestsellers—issues a startling challenge to people on both sides of the aisle: America is addicted to outrage, we’re at the height of a twenty-year bender, and we need an intervention. In the instant New York Times bestseller, Glenn Beck addresses how America has become more and more divided—both politically and socially. Americans are now less accepting, less forgiving, and have lost faith in many of the country’s signature ideals. They are quick to point a judgmental finger at the opposing party, are unwilling to doubt their own ideologies, and refuse to have any self-awareness whatsoever. Beck states that this current downward spiral will ultimately lead to the destruction of everything America has fought so hard to preserve. This is not simply a Republican problem. This is not simply a Democratic problem. This is everyone’s burden, and we need to think like recovering addicts and change. Mirroring traditional twelve-step programs, Beck outlines the actions that Americans must follow in order to prevent a farther decline down this current path of hostile bitterness. Drawing from his own life experiences and including relevant examples for each step, he is able to lead us to a more hopeful, happy future. From learning how to believe in something greater than ourselves to understanding the importance of humility, each chapter encourages self-reflection and growth. Addicted to Outrage is a timely and necessary guide for how Americans—right and left—must change to survive.

The Second Founding: How the Civil War and Reconstruction Remade the Constitution

Author : Eric Foner

ISBN10 : 0393652580

Publisher : W. W. Norton & Company

Number of Pages : 288

Category : History

Viewed : 1577

Book Summary: From the Pulitzer Prize–winning scholar, a timely history of the constitutional changes that built equality into the nation’s foundation and how those guarantees have been shaken over time. The Declaration of Independence announced equality as an American ideal, but it took the Civil War and the subsequent adoption of three constitutional amendments to establish that ideal as American law. The Reconstruction amendments abolished slavery, guaranteed all persons due process and equal protection of the law, and equipped black men with the right to vote. They established the principle of birthright citizenship and guaranteed the privileges and immunities of all citizens. The federal government, not the states, was charged with enforcement, reversing the priority of the original Constitution and the Bill of Rights. In grafting the principle of equality onto the Constitution, these revolutionary changes marked the second founding of the United States. Eric Foner’s compact, insightful history traces the arc of these pivotal amendments from their dramatic origins in pre–Civil War mass meetings of African-American “colored citizens” and in Republican party politics to their virtual nullification in the late nineteenth century. A series of momentous decisions by the Supreme Court narrowed the rights guaranteed in the amendments, while the states actively undermined them. The Jim Crow system was the result. Again today there are serious political challenges to birthright citizenship, voting rights, due process, and equal protection of the law. Like all great works of history, this one informs our understanding of the present as well as the past: knowledge and vigilance are always necessary to secure our basic rights.

Book Summary: Classic Books Library presents this brand new edition of “The Federalist Papers”, a collection of separate essays and articles compiled in 1788 by Alexander Hamilton. Following the United States Declaration of Independence in 1776, the governing doctrines and policies of the States lacked cohesion. “The Federalist”, as it was previously known, was constructed by American statesman Alexander Hamilton, and was intended to catalyse the ratification of the United States Constitution. Hamilton recruited fellow statesmen James Madison Jr., and John Jay to write papers for the compendium, and the three are known as some of the Founding Fathers of the United States. Alexander Hamilton (c. 1755–1804) was an American lawyer, journalist and highly influential government official. He also served as a Senior Officer in the Army between 1799-1800 and founded the Federalist Party, the system that governed the nation’s finances. His contributions to the Constitution and leadership made a significant and lasting impact on the early development of the nation of the United States.

Letters to Aaron-The Hal Luebbert Story

Author : Hal von Luebbert

ISBN10 : 9781450098007

Publisher : Xlibris Corporation

Number of Pages : 318

Category : Biography & Autobiography

Book Summary: First published as the author's primal scream, "Letters to Aaron" is an autobiographical and factual story of treachery - treachery typical of the United States. Nations, tribes, and people like Hungary, the Rhade, Montagnard, and Hmong (Meo), of Vietnam and Laos, to say nothing of most of the nations in Latin America, will recognize and know it well. Nearly countless individuals, including statesmen, soldiers, and covert operatives sacrificed on the altar of corrupt capitalism would, too - were they not dead as the result. Recruited at sixteen years of age by the CIA and trained in Iceland and Germany with the Tenth Special Forces Group, Hal Luebbert did missions in East Germany, Hungary, and Finland (i.e., the Soviet Union) before being sent to Cuba with orders to kill Fidel Castro. Disillusioned by the obvious propagandist fabrications of his superiors once having reached the island nation, Hal rejected his orders, returning on his own to the U.S., and writing a warning letter to Castro. The rest, it is said, is history. Stymied finally in its efforts to punish the renegade, the U.S. played its Ace in the Hole the Internal Revenue Service. In 1978, the US government in its IRS avatar destroyed his business and family. In 1985, when he had recovered and remarried, they did it all again, this time driving a teenage son to three attempts at suicide. A war ensued, and when von Luebbert counterattacked federal murder attempts with electronic and personal surveillance proving massive governmental crime, a US District Court protected their federal employers by ruling his records exempted under the Freedom of Information Act by the national secrets exemption. US Senators and national media forwarded proof of federal crime like mayhem, murder, rape, and extortion to commit rape protected their masters by concealment of the evidence and personal silence. ' Remember,' 2nd President John Adams said, 'democracy never lasts long. It soon wastes, exhausts, and murders itself. There never was a democracy yet that did not commit suicide.' Hal von Luebbert's war has proved the fact of the one certainty for survival exists in a rapidly decaying democracy. That is to "get something" - preferably a great deal - on people high in government. If there is a mitigating factor, it is only that in a government like ours, there is always much to find. Protected still by evidence of federal crime, together with the fact of large numbers of remaining witnesses available for subpoena, von Luebbert lives mostly in the wild in Texas and states where concealed handgun laws make it possible for him to defend himself with lethal force. He is also a sixth degree black belt and three time national judo champion. It helps when government reverts to its true character and methods.

Book Summary: Some of these stories are experiences I have had, and some are fiction. We all make choices every day-what food we're going to eat, friends we'll make, how we speak to one another, whether we befriend a stranger, what we will wear, what movie or TV program we watch, what we'll do on the weekends, what school or college we will attend, what car we will buy, where we will live, what kind of pet we want, whether we want to eat dinner at a restaurant or have fast food, where will we vacation, what church we will attend, and what job we want. Life is made up of daily choices, and those choices make up our character and who we are as individuals. This book will hopefully help you make some of these choices in your own life. I made the choice to write this book, and with the encouragement of family and friends, I did.

Book Summary: This book was written by a middle class, construction worker, welder, mechanic, ranch hand, cowboy, educator, former president of a union local, shop steward and US Marine who cares about Americans and America. I wanted to let my feelings out as to what I see happening to this country. For this to be happening in this country, we couldnt be too bright. When people forget to use common sense, stop representing the people who voted them in, all in the name off lobbyists, special interest, lies, to be bought out to pass bills that spend money they dont have. When this country is set up to bring hard times on hard working Americans for power and money, America is in trouble. When the news media sells out for high salaries to lie to Americans and not in their best interest its time you question what they are doing. When Americans are willing to give their lives for this country and come back from overseas duty and are said to be enemies of the state, along with people who still believe in religion, the Constitution, Bill of Rights, Its time to start asking question of our leadership. When our leaders tell illegal aliens to break our laws, the laws they took an oath to defend, its time we start looking for leaders who will up hold the laws. Money doesnt make you rich but knowing right from wrong does, as does being willing to stand for that your country makes you richer. Our forefathers gave us that gift by doing just that stood up for this country with their blood. Freedoms and the right to pursue happiest makes you rich because if you use it right youll find happiness. Money doesnt always give you that. Now the government thinks they know whats best for use. But as Jefferson said when then government acts under the pretense of taking care of you lose freedoms and rights. Now they are using backdoor tactics to take these rights away from you under the pretense they know what better for you then you do and theyll protect us from ourselves. Why? Because we just aint to bright are we? I am richer than 95% of these rich people because I was blessed with a beautiful wife of 38 years, two sons, a new grandson, and two great daughter-in-laws along with great families on both sides. I have friends from Mexico to Canada because I traveled competing in the sport I love and skill does compete in. I dont have to destroy peoples lives because of money and power. My family has had its hard times as well as our good times but we were willing to work them out for the betterment of the whole. All because of what our forefather taught us about freedoms. We now have people in government calling us a dirty nation (but look what this country has given them) and yet they belittle it to other countries for their interest with no pride in what this country has done to make the world a better place. They point fingers while they are doing the same thing under the cover of their pointed fingers and Americans cant see for the words and promises and lies. All this because of smooth talking salespeople. Wake up before they spend you and your grand kids into a debt they never recover from. Wake up before the end of this country as we know it and want to pass on to our future is gone because of people wanting an elite ruling class. They are willing to divide this country with an old war tactic of divide and conquer, by using hate and prejudice to get the job done with not caring about the aftermath of what they have done. Thats not leadership but greed. All we have to do to change for the better is get smart, find Americans who believe in Americans and America and vote them in. Not Politicians, but Americans with common sense and desire to made this once great country Great Again. Vote in 2010 for true change by voting us out of debt by voting our congress out.
